Some days it felt like just yesterday and other days, like today, it felt like quicksand. Floyd reviewed his notes before beginning. “Your ex-husband has a history of dealing with unsavory characters.”

“Even now? With the success of his TV cooking show?” I asked.

“It looks like Elliott had never fully given up his affinity for drugs, alcohol, and women. What I don’t understand is why Lady Jane ever took him back in the first place. Then they had a son, who, of course, you’re familiar with—Desi. But he must not like his father too much because he goes by the name of Turner,” Floyd said.

“Well, that threw me off.”

“There’s something here, Bailey. I just don’t know what yet …” He almost sounded reassuring.

“Have you checked with Rex? I’ve forgotten his last name but he was a sous chef to Elliott.”

“He hasn’t worked for Elliott in ages. And I am guessing you know about the mobster Tony Esposito?”

“Not much. I just remember he was involved with the mobsters at the end.”

“Did you ever meet his parents? Did he have any siblings?” Floyd looked at me. These were such basic questions. I worried that my impetuous marriage would never turn me loose.

“I never met his parents. I know Elliott had a volatile relationship with his father.” I thought about it. “I never met any of his siblings. I only met Lady Jane the one time. She and Elliott had a tempestuous relationship. Maybe he liked it like that.” I thought about how little I really knew about Elliott. How I could just rush into something as serious as marriage because of my racing hormones and my hurt feelings over Griffin.

“Let’s see what the private investigators turn up. Bailey, you may have just been in the wrong place at the wrong time.” I thought about it. I just may have been in the right place in order to protect my daughter.
